Southern Building Arts is a Huntsville, Alabama group of Artisan-Builders established by Kenn Mease. Performing unique construction designs and unparalleled craftsmanship, Southern Building Arts continues to experience success in the design and construction of many varied construction projects.

Kenn began his journey in the construction industry as a teenager, helping his uncles who were accomplished carpenters and cabinet makers. Continuing in the family tradition of superb craftsmanship and unquestionable trust, Kenn has taken a long journey of learning the multi facets of the building trades. From carpenter, to estimator to supervisor to construction manager, Kenn has worked with many organizations from NASA to New South Building Associates honing the skills required to becoming an accomplished builder.

Kenn started Southern Building Arts when a client requested Kenn’s expertise when she purchased a historic home that needed extensive restoration, renovations and sympathetic additions that would satisfy the demanding desires of the owner. Putting pencil to paper Kenn started the design process and gained the Historical Society’s stringent approval for the project, as well as, the required variances from the City Planning Commission. A year later the finished project was heralded as one of the most significant historic accomplishments in the Historic District of Huntsville, Alabama. Kenn continued work in the Huntsville Historic District producing several restoration/renovations projects over the next 5 years.

With a passion for architecture, Southern Building Arts branched out into many varied projects, performing design work in post and beam (timber frame) construction, building in the vernacular, historic recreations, green and sustainable architecture, as well as many other specialty techniques. The demand for Southern Building Arts work and especially their “eye for detail” led to the successful accomplishment of many of its varied projects.

Southern Building Arts most recent project is the Art Home on Monte Sano Mountain in Huntsville, Alabama. Heralded as the “quintessential mountain home” it has been featured in many local newspapers and magazine articles. It’s unique blend of eclectic design, vernacular and green building techniques, coupled with unsurpassed craftsmanship and interesting building products will ensure the houses infamy long into the future.
